Competition Rules

The organization of the EUC Basketball shall be based on the most recent technical regulations of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Competitions

The following competitions will be held:

  • European Universities Championship Basketball Women.
  • European Universities Championship Basketball Men.

Programme

The Championship will last seven (7) days including one (1) day off for each team. The games will be held from Monday 15 June 2009 through Wednesday 17 June 2009 (preliminary round) and from Friday 19 June 2009 through Sunday 21 June 2009 (final round).

Entries

The maximum number of teams in each competition is sixteen (16). If more than sixteen (16) entries are received, the EUSA EC will determine the system of qualification. When less than six (6) entries are received, the event will  be held as an EUSA Cup.

The National University Sports Association (NUSA) may nominate more than one team in each competition only in the case that less than 16 entries have been received by 15 March 2009. An announcement will be issued from the Organizing Committee after 15 March 2009   indicating the number of empty places and the new entries application rules.  If more than one team from a NUSA is nominated, they must be from different Universities and the nomination must define a ranking order to aid seeding.
The winner of the previous championship has the right to take part in the event in addition to the relevant NUSA limit.

Delegation

The delegation will consist of a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of fourteen (14) athletes and a minimum of one (1) and a maximum of five (5) officials. A Head of the Delegation must be appointed.

Each delegation must, at their own cost, include a basketball referee with the highest national license (relevant license of the National Basketball Federation must be submitted 2 months prior the championships). Delegations failing to fulfil this obligation must pay 1000 Euro to the Organising Committee. Accommodation and food for the referees must be provided by the OC without charging of the participation fee.

Playing Scheme

The format of the tournament will be decided by SCAC taking into consideration the number of teams entered. When the maximum number of teams participate in the tournament, the format will include a preliminary round in which the teams will form four groups of 4 teams (men) and 3 teams (women). The first two teams from each group will qualify to the quarterfinals for positions 1-8, playing in nock-out games for semi finals and finals, and the rest will play with a similar format for positions 9-16 (men) and 9-12 (women).

Draw/Seeding

The draw of the tournament will be done in the presence of an EUSA Representative taking into account EUSA Basketball ranking. The University of the Hosting City will be placed in first (1) place in pool A. Teams from the same country shall wherever possible be placed in a different pool.

Financial obligations

Each team has to pay fees defined in EUC Regulations by the specified date. The deposit must be paid on EUSA request.
